Oh my!   Not only did the editors miss the fact that the verb to “work out” is TWO words (known as a PHRASAL VERB), but they also did not realize that “check out” should be TWO words!   You would think that editors working for a HOTEL would know that check-out is the noun for what you do when you check out (verb) of a hotel. Gearing Up with More Phrasal Verbs! Work out and check out are just two examples of phrasal verbs that many people get mixed up.   One of my pet peeves is a phrase you might see often on websites, “Signup Here” or “Sign-Up Here.”   “Sign up” (TWO words) is a PHRASAL VERB like “work out” and “check out.”   “Sign-up” or “Signup” is the noun for the act of signing up.   E.g., “The sign-up table is down the hall to your right.” Other examples of PHRASAL VERBS are: Break out (noun:   breakout) Stand out (adjective:   standout) Take off (noun:   takeoff or take-off) Make up (noun:   make-up) Count down (noun:   countdown) Break down (noun:   breakdown) Group on (noun:   Groupon) â€" Just Kidding!!! Foul up (noun:   foul-up) â€" Get where I’m going here? Dear readers, here’s the point:   Just because there is a word in existence that glues the two parts of a phrasal verb together does NOT mean that you can glue those two words together and have the result still be a verb!   If you want to use a verb plus a preposition (up, down, on, off, etc.) as a verb, keep a space between the two parts of the verb.   Do NOT stick them together or you will end up with a noun or possibly an adjective.   You can do better than those Hilton editors, can’t you? WILL ROGERS Will Rogers was born November 4 in 1879 on a large ranch in the Cherokee Nation near what is now present day Oologah, Oklahoma. Will Rogers was taught be a freed slave how to use a lasso as a tool to work Texas Longhorn cattle on the family ranch. When he grew older, Will Rogers' roping skills developed so good that he was listed in the Guinness Book of Records for throwing three lassos at once. It said that one rope caught the running horse's neck, the other would hoop around the rider and the third swooped up under the horse to loop all four legs. Will Rogers' lariat feats were recorded in the movie, "The Ropin' Fool". His hard-earned skills won him jobs trick roping in wild west shows and on the vaudeville stages where he started telling small jokes. Before he knew it, his wise cracks and folksy observations became more prized by audiences than his expert roping. He became recognized as being a very informed and smart philosopher, telling the truth in very simple words so that everyone could understand. After his sophomore year, Will Rogers dropped out of school to become a cowboy in a cattle drive. He always regretted that he didn't finish school, but he made sure that he never stopped learning and talking with smart people. Obviously his hard work paid off. Will Rogers was the star of Broadway and 71 movies of the 1920s and 1930s. Besides that he was a popular broadcaster. He also wrote more than 4000 newspaper columns. During his lifetime, he traveled around the globe three times meeting people, covering wars, talking about peace and learning everything possible. He wrote six books and was the first big time radio commentator. He was a guest at the White House and his opinoins were sought by the leaders of the world. "I never met a man i didn't like," was his credo of genuine love and respect for humanity and all people everywhere. He gave his own money to disaster victims and raised thousands for the Red Cross and Salvation Army. Will Rogers never met a man he didn't like. He always enjoyed riding horseback, roping steers or playing polo. He always said there was something wrong with anybody that didn't like a horse. He always thought of himself as first a caring member of the human race, American, then a Cherokee Indian, a faithful husband and a father. Even though he was the top-paid star in Hollywood, he was a family man. He was very clos to his wife, Betty, and their four children. Will Rogers was married to Betty Blake on November 23, 1908. Lack of enough funds leads to such students’ mission opportunities which means they are likely to continue being marginalized even in the job market. The urge to help out the people is what drives the need for forming the NPO. Once the need is established, the next step involves registering the NPO in the suitable category, in this case, as a charitable organization.   The Board of Directors plays managerial roles touching on the day-to-day activities of the organization such as fund raising, financial management as well as planning (Anderson, Dunkelberg, 1990).   To select Board members, the criteria involve selection of individuals who are experienced and are of unquestionable character. Conclusion Setting up a NPO is a tedious and cumbersome exercise in the U.S. with a lot of duplicating functions, there is a need for different states to streamline the registration process in order to make it possible for those who have the will to help out in certain causes. It’s fun to find, among the many strange ancient forms, a word that is still in use, with the same meaning, a thousand years later. More often, though, a word that at first sight recalls a modern word turns out to be something quite different. Take for example a word that frequently draws giggles from undergrads because of its similarity to our unlovely word snot. snotor: adj., prudent, wise snotor-lice: adv., wisely, prudently Hrothgar, the king haunted by Grendel, is described as snotor. The adjective derives from the noun snyttru, â€Å"wisdom, discernment.† Our word snot, on the other hand, meaning â€Å"nasal mucus,† existed in OE as gesnot. This word is related, reasonably enough, to the word snout, â€Å"the projecting nose of an animal.† Besides its literal meaning, snot has figurative uses. The first recorded use of snot to mean â€Å"a despicable person† is 1809. The adjective, snotty, came along in 1870, with the meaning â€Å"impudent, curt, conceited.† Snotnose, to describe an immature or inexperienced person, was first recorded in 1941. Old English had a verb snyttan, â€Å"to wipe or pick one’s nose.† As snite, it survives in dialect to refer to a particularly unpleasant way of blowing ones nose. Maybe snite deserves a place in the standard language as a simpler way to talk about rhinotillexis. Mothers could admonish their children not to snite in public.
